Welcome, Mr. Brett Flemmer, Dean of Students and Activities Director!
- Where are you from and where did you grow up? Born in Sioux Falls, received my K-12 education in Marshall, Minnesota. I am still working on the “growing up” part.
- Describe your high school experience: Everything looks different in the review mirror. Looking back at my high school years, I have nothing but fond memories. I recall thinking that life was busy and stressful – little did I know!
- From where did you graduate college and with what degree(s)? In 2009, I graduated from Southwest Minnesota State University and majored in Elementary Education with a Specialization in Middle School English and Language Arts. In 2015, I earned my master's degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University Irvine. This year I began the specialist program in Pre-K – 12 Principal Leadership from the University of South Dakota.
- What do you teach/coach/lead at Northwestern? I am the Dean of Students and Activities Director. I will be assisting Coach Mielitz with the girls’ basketball program as well.
- How long have you been here? This is my first year at Northwestern, and I am loving every second of it! THANK YOU FOR YOUR WARM WELCOME!
- When did you realize you wanted to become a teacher? It wasn’t until after my third year at South Dakota State University, in the Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences program, after completing two internships with the Game, Fish, and Parks, that I realized I wanted to teach and coach. I enjoyed working outdoors, but I liked working with kids even more!
- What is rewarding about your job? I am passionate about helping others. What I enjoy most about my job at Northwestern, seemingly everything I do, all day long, involves doing my best to help others.
- If you could have any other job what would it be? I enjoy personal finance and personal fitness. I don’t think I would enjoy finance as an occupation, but physical therapy would be an intriguing occupation (see, I would still get to help people!).
- Who is your biggest role model? My little brother, Keith! He’s a phenomenal teacher and coach. He’s humble, kind, and always helps me keep things in perspective.
- What are your hobbies? Spending time with my wife, Carli, and my baby boy, Rudy! I also enjoy fishing, hunting, and competing!
- Where do you see yourself in ten years? Even happier and healthier than I am now!
- If you could live anywhere else, where? I’ve always thought I could live off the grid, maybe in Aska somewhere.
- What type of music do you listen to? All of it! I enjoy all genres.
- What food is like a guilty pleasure to you? Easy answer: PIZZA
- Last book you read? Fiction: One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus Non-Fiction: Atomic Habits by James Clear
- Who would play the lead in a movie about your life? Jonah Hill
- What super power do you wish you had? Freeze Time
- Biggest pet peeve? Disrespect
- What advice do you have for the students of Northwestern? Slow these moments down and enjoy every second. Build relationships with your teachers – they care about you so much! Take chances, make mistakes, and learn from them! Smile behind your mask, it will have a positive impact on you and everyone around you.
